The pope’s recent visit to the Middle East was expected to meet political “minefields”, according to the New York Times.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

Early morning fire kills four New York group home residents

After an early morning fire began, four out of the nine people living at the Riverview Individual Residential Alternative group home located in Wells, New York were killed by the blaze. The Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office, which supervises the home, told the media that the fire started at approximately 5:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time. Two staff members were at the home at the time, who safely evacuated four of the five survivors.

The names of the residents killed in the fire were not able to be released due to New York’s Mental Hygiene Law, but are able to be identified as two adult men, aged 32 and 52, and two adult women, aged 43 and 60. A 71-year-old male was injured in the fire, and was taken to a hospital in Utica, a nearby city. The other four residents have been relocated to an unnamed group home. Both staff members are also being examined at the hospital.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and friends of the four victims and to continue to pray for the full recovery of those five people and two staff members who survived this incident. I also want to express my thanks and appreciation for the first responders and volunteers who worked swiftly and diligently to respond to this tragedy,” David Patterson, the governor of New York, said to the media.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined. However, the New York Civil Liberties Union stated that “the blaze appears to have been an electrical fire and the sprinkler system was knocked out immediately.” They also called for “an immediate investigation into the causes of and contributing factors of the fire.”

The New York State Department of State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is currently investigating the causes of the blaze, with help from New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the New York State Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.

‘Astonishing’ figures show 800 Scottish NHS staff earning over £140,000

	In tough financial times we need to make sure that our focus is on patient care and every penny is spent in the most efficient way.

Over 800 National Health Service staff in Scotland are earning more than £140,000 each year—more than First Minister Alex Salmond. New figures also reveal that 3,000 NHS workers are earning over £100,000. One NHS board alone, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, employs 893 staff earning more than £100,000, and 181 being paid over £140,000.

Jackie Baillie, health spokeswoman for the Labour Party, which uncovered the figures, said they were “astonishing”, and urged health boards to examine if savings can be made by reducing salaries of top earners. “This is a far better option than cutting frontline staff like nurses and midwives. In tough financial times we need to make sure that our focus is on patient care and every penny is spent in the most efficient way.” She further said: “In the current economic climate, it is impossible to justify huge salaries for consultants and senior executives when health boards are planning 4000 job losses this year, including 1500 nurses and midwives.”

Britain’s largest health service industrial union, Unison, questioned the amount of money the NHS was paying. A spokesperson said: “Unison doesn’t begrudge anybody the rate of pay for the job but obviously our membership will be concerned that while they are to face a pay freeze and people delivering frontline services are losing their jobs, there is a cohort of folk who appear to earn more than the most senior politician in the land.”

It is a widely known fact that Australia is one of the most underinsured developed countries in the world. A 2011 survey by CommInsure Life Insurance found that Australians were underinsured by 3.1 trillion dollars. Only 56 percent had life insurance, with most having insufficient cover – 65 percent of them only had the default level of insurance in their super fund. The survey also found that 46 percent of Australians will go on holiday after a brush with death in comparison to 34 percent that will get insurance.

The risk of underinsurance

A typical underinsured family in Australia will see the family income drop by half in case of a tragic event, forcing them to struggle to make their mortgage repayments and meet other bills. As a result, those hit by the misfortune are left to depend on government payments, which are usually inadequate. According to the 2011 CommInsure survey, more than half of the Australian population would have to turn to Centrelink in the event that a family member became terminally ill or died. The average weekly support pension provided through Centrelink Disability is less than 350 dollars.

Reasons for underinsurance

Even so, insurance has been around for a very long time, but over the years, there have been numerous stories of Australians not being underinsured or not insured against disasters. The same reasons are often given for underinsurance, including the cost or inability to afford it, the assumed lack of need for insurance or the assumption that it\’s not important. Other reasons include not being aware of the need for it and confusion about the different types of insurance available.

Many young and healthy Australians believe they won\’t be affected by serious illness or injury. The leading reasons for taking out extra cover in Australia are when taking out a mortgage, on the encouragement of friends or family and when a child is born.

Insurance index

In February 2013, in an effort to test the popular perception that Australians are underinsured, TAL conducted a survey involving more than 1200 Australians. The vast majority of those involved admitted that they did not have adequate insurance. An index was developed to measure people\’s perceptions of their cover, which used a score of 0 to 100 based on the types of insurance an individual owned and whether he or she felt the coverage amount was sufficient.

The nation score for the index was a meager 24.2. Only 8 percent of the participants scored above 70. 30 percent scored 0 because they had no form of personal insurance. The results were surprising in light of the increasing take-up of life insurance via superannuation in the recent past. Although most Australians have some form of life insurance through their super, some are not even aware of it, while many more do not know whether their level of cover is adequate.

South Gippsland, Australia local council candidate Sue Plowright speaks with Wikinews about environment, education, and other local issues

Since June 2019, the people of South Gippsland Shire, located at the southernmost tip of Australia, have been without a local council, after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council. Administrators were appointed by the Victorian state government in July 2019, who have governed the shire since then. However, South Gippsland’s council is scheduled to be restored with an election to be held via post from October 5-22, 2021.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Sue Plowright. She is an independent contesting the Coastal-Promontory ward, which covers towns such as Venus Bay, Waratah Bay, Yanakie, Foster, Port Welshpool, and Toora. The Coastal-Promontory Ward elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council.
