Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

CanadaVOTES: NDP incumbent David Christopherson running in Hamilton Centre

Friday, September 26, 2008

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party incumbent David Christopherson is standing for re-election in the riding of Hamilton Centre.

From 1985-1990, he served as a Hamilton City Councillor for Ward Four. He was elected to Ontario legislature in 1990, defeating a Liberal cabinet minister. Under Bob Rae, Christopherson served as Minister of Correctional Services and Solicitor-General. He did not seek re-election to legislature in 2003, opting to run for mayor of Hamilton. Considered a frontrunner, he lost to Larry Di Ianni.

He returned to politics just months later, changing his focus to federal politics. Christopherson beat Liberal cabinet minister Stan Keyes, the incumbent, serving as NDP critic for cities, community infrastructure, labour and steel policy. He has served as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Steel Caucus.

Wikinews contacted David Christopherson, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

First elected in 2004, David Christopherson is the only MP to have represented Hamilton Centre, which was created in 2003 from parts of three other ridings. Only 38 km², small versus other area ridings, its located on the south side of Hamilton Harbour. Alphabetically, Christopherson’s challengers are Anthony Giles (Libertarian), John Livingstone (Green), Lisa Nussey (Marxist-Leninist), Leon O’Connor (Conservative), Ryan Sparrow (Communist), and Helen M. Wilson (Liberal).

Popular Music Used In Commercials

Stop The Insanity-Hire Someone To Write A Jingle!

Many years ago, in a far away place and time, companies wishing to promote their wares on television would hire songwriters to develop advertising jingles to promote whatever they were selling. But recently, in my mind, some companies have crossed the proverbial line, so to speak, by using classic Beatles music to pitch their products.

Am I the only one who is absolutely appalled by the superstore Target using the great Beatles classic hit entitled Hello Goodbye (although in the commercial they have changed it to Hello Good Buy, how clever) to hawk their wares? Couldnt the corporate big wigs just hire Barry Manilow (who wrote the classic McDonalds jingle: You deserve a break today) to write a sappy jingle? Just when in my lifetime did the jingle writers become an extinct breed?

However, sadly, this trend has been used over and over again in recent years and there does not seem to be an end of it. Moreover, if I hear the Badfinger song Come And Get It (in the advertisement for GMC automobiles), Ill scream!

When Michael Jackson allowed Nike to abuse the legendary hit by the Beatles Revolution, it seemed that the floodgates were opened and an advertisement bandwagon was born. But, I am not sure that these companies realize just how many people are offended by their blatant misuse of these classic rock and roll songs. In fact, I will purposely stay away from specific products that are, in my mind, abusing the classic hits from yesteryear.

But, apparently, these starving songwriters (or whoever owns the rights to the music) are being very well compensated for the right to use these classic songs for advertisement purposes. In fact Randy Bachman, formally of the Canadian group the Guess Who and later Bachman-Turner Overdrive, turned down a lucrative offer from a bathroom tissue company to use his song Takin Care Of Business (how clever) for a television commercial. He did, however, allow the song to be used for an Office Depot commercial, calling the partnership a perfect marriage. Bachman also declared, you make more in one year with that commercial than you do in your entire lifetime of your band in the 70’s with that song. So I guess I cant blame the artists, if I had written a song twenty years ago and someone offered me six figures for the right to use the song in a commercial, I will be honest, I wouldnt hesitate to sign on the dotted line. But large corporations and specifically, marketing firms, are just being lazy and careless with our beloved music by bypassing the jingle writers and just plugging in a relevant classic song and that will get people to buy whatever product they are advertising. To me, it is just too convenient. I guess I am naive, but when did it all become about the money, not the music?

Sadly, this trend is catching on like wildfire, and nowadays you can read about many rock legends allowing their classic songs to be used for commercial purposes. Why we have Iggy Pop for Royal Caribbean, Bob Dylan promoting Victorias Secret products, Billy Preston teaming up with the Zombies for Fidelity Investments, Led Zeppelin pitching Cadillacs, Aerosmith for Buick, the OJays for Coors Beer, Deep Purple promoting Dodge, the Who allowing their music to be used in Cisco commercials, the flower power group the Association pitching Allstate Insurance, why we even have Helen Reddys classic anthem hit song I Am Woman being utilized in a Burger King commercial. The list goes on and on and when will the insanity end, and are these songs actually helping to sell the products they are endorsing?

It wont be long before we hear he Donovan song Mellow Yellow actually promoting the soft drink called Mellow Yellow. Or how about the R.E.M. song called Orange Crush being used for, you guessed it, the soft drink called Orange Crush. While were at it, how about beating down some more Beatles classic hits such as Ticket To Ride for the highest bidding airline company, She Loves You, for the latest stinky mens cologne or the song I Feel Fine, for an allergy medication? How about using Blondies hit single from 1980 entitled Call Me for an AT & T commercial? We could be hearing the classic Hollies tune entitled Bus Stop (plug in any major city bus line here) or Angel Of The Morning by Marrilee Rush for some feminine product or even Baby I Love You by the Ronettes for a diaper commercial. I have a few for the latest male enhancement product on the market, how about the Three Dog Night ditty called Easy To Be Hard, Bad Companys Feel Like Makin Love, the 1976 hit by Heart entitled Magic Man or the Rolling Stones hit Start Me Up?

While were at it, how about the Rolling Stones song Tumbin Dice (plug in any Indian Casino), the Police hit called Every Breath You Take for a cold remedy, the iconic Elvis hit Hound Dog being used for a dog food commercial? How about the Whos classic song called I Can See For Miles for Lens Crafter or the Mamas and the Papas 60’s hit California Dreamin for any airline company?

We can take it several steps further with Ive Gotta Get A Message To You by the Bee Gees for a telephone company, the Bobby Fuller hit entitled I Fought The Law, (plug in any lawyers name) or Don Henleys hit song called Dirty Laundry for Tide laundry soap? One could also make a case for the Chicago single called Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? being used in a Timex commercial, the Doors classic song Light My Fire being utilized by Kingsford Charcoal or the 1972 Rod Stewart hit You Wear It Well for any clothing manufacturer.

Its just a matter of time before we hear the Tom Jones song Whats New Pussycat in a cat food commercial. Or how about the Raspberries hit Go All The Way used for a Trojan commercial? And dont get me started on sleeping aids like Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics or Last Night I Didnt Get To Sleep At All by the Fifth Dimension, the Robert John ditty, The Lion Sleeps Tonight or the Everly Brothers number one hit from 1958 entitled All I Have To Do Is Dream. How about the Eagles classic hit entitled Take It To The Limit being used to pitch a major credit card? And any local funeral home would be pleased to use the Queen ditty called Another One Bites The Dust or When I Die by Blood, Sweat & Tears or God forbid, Knockin On Heavens Door by Bob Dylan. And now that you got me started, how would the hit song by Olivia Newton-John called Have You Ever Been Mellow or the Elton John hit called, I Guess Thats Why They Call It The Blues, the Chicago hit Make Me Smile, or better yet, Do You Feel Like We Do by Peter Frampton, being used for the latest and greatest antidepressant to hit the market? One could use the Johnny Nash tune called I Can See Clearly Now for any eyeglass maker or One Headlight, by the Wallflowers in an Auto Zone commercial. Arent you surprised that the hit song by Sammy Johns entitled Chevy Van hasnt been used for a Chevy commercial..maybe it is the line and we made love in my Chevy van that is holding them back.

We could get real creative and utilize the Beach Boys hit California Girls for the tourism council of California or the Lynyrd Skynyrd hit Sweet Home Alabama to promote tourism in that southern state. How about the hit by the B-52s called Rock Lobster for, you guessed it, they could change the words up a bit and call it Red Lobster! And we must include more airline companies in this mess, like Jet by Paul McCartney, Jet Airliner by Steve Miller, Eddie Moneys Two Tickets To Paradise or the worst one yet to come, the John Denver penned Leaving On A Jet Plane that was sung by Peter, Paul & Mary. And one more just for fun, the Neil Diamond classic You Dont Bring Me Flowers utilized for an FTD commercial?

The list seems endless and we may hear some of the aforementioned music paired up with their respective products. Some may seem downright silly, but after all, it is all about the money, not the music.

Indian capital New Delhi reports surge in COVID-19 cases

Friday, April 22, 2022

On Wednesday, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) declared a mask mandate in the National Capital Region as COVID-19 cases once again soared in India’s capital. According to authorities, violators will be fined INR500 for non-compliance with the mandate. Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal advised its citizens on Twitter to “ensure strict enforcement of COVID appropriate behaviour”.

On Tuesday, Delhi saw a 26% jump in COVID-19 cases as compared to the day before. Yesterday, India reported 2,067 new COVID-19 cases out of which Delhi accounted for 30% of the total cases while Delhi’s positivity rate increased from 4.42% to 5.70%. India’s daily infection tally has been on a downfall after it experienced the third wave of the pandemic since January.

Delhi, with other states including Kerala, Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Mizoram have been reporting a surge in COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks. The Union Health Secretary of India, Rajesh Bhushan has warned the states against leniency and added it could negate its pandemic management efforts. It has also ordered states to monitor infection clusters and increase genome sequencing.

4-year-old boy killed by dog in Liverpool, England

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

A four-year-old boy has been killed by a dog in the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. The child has been identified as John Paul Massey. The animal belonged to his uncle. The boy’s 63-year-old grandmother Helen Foulkes tried to protect the boy but ended up getting bitten by the dog in the process. She had to receive hospital treatment for the injury.

The dog itself was shot dead in the front garden of the house where the attack had taken place. The police had said that they did not take further action after receiving a report about dog breeding earlier this year.

Chief Superintendent Steve Ashley from the police force said about the incident: “In February this year a housing officer rang Merseyside Police to say they had received complaints of dog breeding at the address. At that time the police said it wasn’t a police matter and no action was taken by Merseyside Police.

That is contrary to our policies and an investigation is now launched into exactly what happened in February.”

Car bomb in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico kills several, many injured

Saturday, July 17, 2010

A car bomb that exploded at about 20:00 MDT Thursday (01:00 Friday UTC) in a violent area of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico killed several people and injured more.

Police spokesman Jacinto Seguro said Friday that Mexican federal police received a call that an officer was dead. Seguro went on to say, “When they went to check the car, there was a dead body in there, dressed up like a police officer, but it wasn’t one of ours. They put him in a civilian car but dressed him up in a municipal police uniform. That’s when the bomb went off. It’s like an act of terrorism.”

Federal police spokesman Ramon Salinas said the blast killed two officers, a paramedic, and one civilian, although Mayor Jose Reyes said that only three died. At least six others were injured, although reports have said the total injured may be as high as sixteen. Four remain in the hospital, including three paramedics and one civilian.

Mexican authorities say it was a car bomb, but counter-terrorism experts are still unsure as to what caused the vehicle to explode. Intelligence expert Fred Burton said, “For this to be an improvised grenade attack, in some capacity, it doesn’t surprise me.”

The Juárez Cartel, one of the two drug-traffickers in the area, claimed responsibility for the bombing in a graffiti message. “We have more car bombs,” the graffiti said.

Ciudad Juárez has a history for trafficking drugs to the United States, especially into Texas.

Before the explosion, the police arrested a suspected leader of the Juarez cartel, Jesus Armando Acosta Guerrero.

This year more than 7,000 people have died as a result of drug-related violence in Mexico since this year began. Attorney General Arturo Chavez on Friday said nearly 25,000 people have died in the last three and a half year period.

Record number of bicycles sold in Australia in 2006

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Bicycle sales in Australia have recorded record sales of 1,273,781 units for 2006, exceeding car sales by 32 percent. It is the fifth year in a row that the bicycle industry has sold more than one million units, a figure yet to be realised by car manufacturers.

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) spokesman Ian Christie said Australians were increasingly using bicycles as an alternative to cars. Sales rose nine percent in 2006 while the car market stalled. Mr Christie said people were looking to cut their fuel costs and improve their fitness.

Mr Christie said organisations were beginning to supply bicycles as a company vehicle. “There is an emerging trend towards people using bikes as their official company-supplied vehicle in place of the traditional company car,” he said.

“Some of Australia’s biggest corporations now have bicycle fleets, and when you add in government organisations, we now know of at least 50 organisations which operate fleets of bikes.”

“Although the company bicycle is a long way from taking over from the company car, it’s an important trend when you consider that nearly half of all cars sold are to company fleets.”

The CPF claims most commutes to work are less than 5 kilometres (3 miles) making bicycle travel a viable alternative.

US Senate blocks Alaska refuge drilling

Thursday, December 22, 2005

By a narrow vote late in the evening on December 21st, 2005 the US Senate blocked opening the nation’s oil reserve in National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska . This vote delivers a victory to environmentalists and denies the Bush administration their top energy priority. Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) attached the drilling plan to a measure to fund ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the Senate late last night agreed to pass the defense bill, without the drilling provision.

Two key Republicans, Lincoln D Chafee (R-R.I.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), joined Democrats in opposing the drilling. Senator Lieberman (D-Conn) said yesterday that Stevens was to blame for holding up money for the military. By including the drilling measure in the defense spending bill, it was hoped to twist the senators’ arms into voting for both provisions together in the scramble to finish the important business before the Senate’s Christmas break.
