Lamps are an Integral Part of Home D cor

by

Jenn Jarvis

Rarely, if ever, will you find lamps discussed at the beginning of Home D cor. Normally lamps come to mind after everything else is in place. When the room looks dark and dank even your new furniture doesn t shine. New lamps can change that, but first you need to decide how the lamp will be used.

Will the lamp be an important feature in back of a chair where reading takes place? Will the use of the lamp be used to subtly shine the light across the floor so no one will stumble? Will the lamp be the center of the room, or off in a corner?

When you answer those questions, you ll be able to decide the type of lamps that will bring your home out of the dark ages. There are numerous types of lamps and many come in sets and bring modernization to the room. The integral part of your home d cor still rests on the lamp. It will make the statement that your home is in the modern era or shines like in the past when a gas lamp or candle lit the room.

There are table lamps, floor lamps, hanging lamps, and even indirect lighting. When your options trend toward modern, contemporary lamps fit in well. The choices are yours to make, and they can either match or contrast your color schemes. However you may not want to mix modern with antique. It is often more attractive when you stick with one or the other.

Otherwise it may look like you chose that old antique lamp from the attic, you know the one that looks as though it went through the war and barely survived. Give that lamp to the Salvation Army and someone will find a use for it. But in your contemporary home, it simply doesn t fit. Now we re not talking about heirlooms, and if you have one of those, pick a spot where they stand out possibly on an antique table or in another room.

Lamps are the highlight of any room, and when you install them with the correct wattage your room will look alive. Every lamp has a duty to perform, and not all have to match so choose wisely. If your choice is indirect just be sure you have a brighter light to shine on a book or desk. That way your lighting shares in the ability to use it properly.

When you install a lamp to perform a particular duty, everyone will benefit and the integrity shines through.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Buffalo, New York developers have been stymied by old real estate deeds.

The prospective Elmwood Village Hotel may be scuttled and businesses now located there may be forced to move.

Frustrations over property located in an area once known as “Granger Estates” circulate around a clause in the original deeds over land divided by then-owner Erastus Granger in the early 1800’s.

According to the documents, “no business establishment of any kind whatsoever” shall ever be constructed on the property, and they shall forever be exclusively for residential use only. Also prohibited are barns, farms and stables.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies, the prospective hotel developer, announced that his legal research team found the restrictions on properties located between 1109 and 1121 Elmwood Avenue which also stated in part that “no businesses, hospitality establishment of anykind whatsoever” shall ever be permitted to be built on the property.

Savarino, whom is expected to contest the restrictions, said that his company could have ignored the findings, but that, “we can’t risk the future of a multimillion-dollar project on the hope they wouldn’t be discovered. Our opponents would have had a field day if they’d surfaced after the fact.”

Savarino said his attorneys and researchers are anticipated to determine “exactly what weight the restrictions carry and if there’s a way for the courts to negate them.”

Existing businesses are also jeopardized.

Hans Mobius, owner of some of the restricted properties upon which a carriage house is built, said, he wasn’t aware of any restrictions, and “never had a reason to research the deed and title documents.” He confidently added that, “the lawyers can get this taken care of.”

Other threatened businesses include Don Apparel, H.O.D. Tattoo, Forest Plaza Art Gallery and Allentown Music.

Miami of Ohio and Boston College advance to 2010 NCAA men’s ice hockey Frozen Four

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Obviously it was an unbelievable feeling

Miami of Ohio beat the Michigan Wolverines 3–2 at the finals of the NCAA Midwest regional ice hockey tournament Sunday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Miami sophomore forward Alden Hirschfeld scored at 1:54 into the second overtime when his shot from the top of the left face off circle deflected into the goal off the skate of the Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick.

Pat Cannone led the scoring with two power play goals for Miami during regulation. It looked as though Michigan had won the game in the first overtime when Michigan’s forward Kevin Lynch appeared to score. Unfortunately for Michigan the referee blew the whistle calling a penalty just before the puck went in the net. The Miami goaltender Connor Knapp who made 53 saves in the game was named the most outstanding player of the midwest regional tournament.

This was the first multiple overtime game for the Miami of Ohio RedHawks in their 23 years. Miami will be going to the Frozen Four for the second straight year.

It was great to see all those hats on the ice

The Boston College Eagles advanced to the Frozen Four in a shoot out with the Yale Bulldogs. BC defeated Yale 9–7 last night at the finals of the NorthEast regionals in front of 6,054 fans at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

BC forward Cam Atkinson had a hat trick and an assist. Mark Arcobello of Yale also had a hat trick. In an attempt to find a way to stop the Eagles scoring Yale played three different goalies during the game. The sixteen total goals is a NCAA record for a regional tournament game. The previous record was thirteen.

This will be the 22nd time that Boston College has made it to the Frozen Four, it is the ninth for coach Jerry York and their third trip in the past four seasons. BC will face Miami of Ohio in the semifinals on April 8 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

The Benefits Of Professional Teeth Whitening

 • Find Out More About:
 • Top Cosmetic Dentists New York City

byAlma Abell

For many people, making sure that their smile is in pristine condition is a top priority for them and they will go to great measures to ensure this. Over time, your teeth will start to become stained and discolored, which can make them look unclean. There are definitely some over the counter treatments that can help a little bit, but for the most part the results that you get from these over the counter products will be lack luster at best. The only way to get the results that you want is by letting a cosmetic dentist handle your teeth whitening. Here are a few of the many benefits of professional teeth whitening by a Charleston, WV dentist.

Fast Results

One of the biggest benefits of having a professional handle your teeth whitening needs is that they can get you the results you want in the time that you need them. Most of the over the counter whitening methods take a very long time to show any type of change in the whiteness of your teeth. With professional whitening methods, you will be able to notice results within a matter of hours.

Much Whiter Teeth

Another benefit of having a professional whiten your teeth is that they have access to methods that can get your teeth much whiter than any over the counter methods will. Many of the whitening methods on the market today have around three percent hydrogen peroxide, while professional methods have around fifteen percent. The higher the hydrogen peroxide content of a whitening treatment, the more effective it will be for you. Instead of wasting your valuable time and money on ineffective treatments, you need to take advantage of the power of professional treatments.

Correct Application

Another benefit of having a professional perform your teeth whitening is that they have the experience and skill to properly apply the whitening treatments. The problem with over the counter kits is that they are not very clear on how to apply them correctly, which could create some problems. If the solution is left on your teeth too long, then it may cause increased teeth sensitivity. Instead of risking the enamel of your teeth, you can let a professional handle the application of your whitening treatments. Not only are the treatments they give you more effective, they will not have the side effects that the over the counter treatments will have.

Australian man to be executed in Singapore

Saturday, November 19, 2005

Supporters of convicted Australian drug trafficker, Van Nguyen, gathered outside the State Library in Melbourne yesterday to display thousands of messages of opposition to his death sentence.

Callers to talkback radio in Melbourne were overwhelmingly against the death penalty of Nguyen, who immediately admitted his guilt and has cooperated with authorities since being caught smuggling heroin into Singapore. Many called for a boycott of Singaporean products.

25-year-old Nguyen was arrested at Changi Airport in 2002 for carrying heroin and sentenced to death in March. Nguyen claims he carried the 396 grams of heroin strapped to his body in an attempt to pay off his brother Khoa’s $30,000 legal debts.

The Singapore government have announced they will execute Nguyen at dawn on December 2nd. Singapore President S. R. Nathan rejected Nguyen’s clemency four weeks ago. The Melbourne salesman was sentenced to death under Singapore law which determines a mandatory death sentence for anyone found guilty of possessing 15 grams of heroin or more.

Nguyen’s mother was informed on Thursday by registered mail from the Singapore prisons service of the execution date. The letter stated that she should start making funeral arrangements. She will get to see her son in the three days leading up to the execution.

Despite repeated pleas for clemency from many thousands of supporters; religious groups; human rights organisations; the Pope; and the Australian Government – including Prime Minister, John Howard – Singapore officials have said Nguyen’s execution is irreversible.

Mr Howard had argued that Nguyen should be spared, citing mitigating circumstances in his case which pointed to the fact that he was not a serial drug trafficker but had merely been trying to pay off his brother’s debts.

The Victorian Attorney-General, Rob Hulls, says the Singaporean Government has shown no compassion whatsoever in its treatment of Van Nguyen and his family.

“What’s happening is brutal, is inappropriate. I, and the Victorian Government, vehemently oppose the death penalty in any circumstances”, he told ABC Radio. “This is a young kid who has assisted the police all the way… In any other country, he would get a discount in relation to the penalty. But because there is a mandatory death penalty for drug offences in Singapore, this young man may well be executed. It is just grossly inappropriate.”

“Singapore maintains that capital punishment is a criminal justice issue; it is the sovereign right of every country to decide whether or not to include capital punishment within its criminal justice system,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Singapore argues that there was no international consensus that capital punishment should be abolished. At the most recent meeting of the UN Commission on Human Rights, 66 countries dissociated themselves from a resolution calling for the abolition of capital punishment.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong affirmed Singapore’s position by saying that it has to “stand firm on drugs to protect its citizens from the scourge and to ensure the country does not become a conduit for the trafficking of illicit drugs.”

In reply to a letter appealing for clemency from his Australian counterpart Alexander Downer, Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo said: “Mr Nguyen imported almost 400gm of pure heroin which would have supplied more than 26,000 doses to drug addicts.”

No one will be permitted to see Nguyen on the morning of his execution. His body will be released to his mother.
