Refurbished cafeteria opens in Romanian parliament

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

A new, refurbished cafeteria at the Romanian Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest has opened for the use of parliamentarians. The new cafeteria, which has mahogany furniture and leather draped armchairs, was officially opened yesterday, and is situated at the entrance to the Senate headquarters in the Palace of the Parliament.

Members of Parliament said they were not satisfied with the former cafeteria in the Palace, saying that it didn’t have proper tables and chairs to sit on. Many parliamentarians expressed their satisfaction at the opening of the refurbished dining venue, saying that they can now drink a cup of coffee “in a civilised manner” before sessions.

Bucharest’s Palace of the Parliament (Palatul Parlamentului in Romanian) is the largest building in Europe and the third largest building in the world, with an area of approximately 350,000 m². It contains both houses of the Romanian Parliament (the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate), as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC). It is also frequently used as a function centre.

Iconic London mural could be restored

Monday, September 20, 2010

One of London’s most well known murals could be restored after years of neglect if plans by a group of community activists gain public support. The Fitzrovia Mural at Whitfield Gardens on London’s Tottenham Court Road was created by two mural artists and commissioned by Camden Council in 1980, but the mural has since decayed and been vandalised.

Plans will be presented at a public meeting this Tuesday, to include details of the restoration and promote local public space in contrast to potential commercial developments and the focus of the London 2012 Olympics. If enough funds are raised from charitable trusts and public donations the mural could be restored during the summer of 2011.

Plans to be put forward by the Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association, and the London Mural Preservation Society, will present ways to fund not only the restoration work but also projects to raise awareness of conservation, heritage, and the residential and working community. The heritage and mural project hopes to involve many local people who could learn new conservation skills. Also planned are workshops with local children to involve them in their heritage, an exhibition by local artists, guided tours and a celebratory event at the end of the restoration project. In addition to this, a booklet would be produced containing collected oral histories of the people involved and a preservation trust to protect the mural in future years.

The playful painting was created on a Camden Council-owned building in 1980 by artists Mick Jones, (son of the late Jack Jones, trade union leader) and Simon Barber and is a mash up of scenes depicting problems faced by the neighbourhood over the preceding decade.

There is also a caricature of poet Dylan Thomas, who lived in Fitzrovia, and a mocking portrayal of then leader of the Greater London Council, Conservative politician Horace Cutler, who is pictured as a bat-like creature. Other characters include an anonymous greedy developer and a property speculator counting piles of cash.

Peter Whyatt of the neighbourhood association is jointly leading the project to restore the mural. Yesterday he told Wikinews he had a number of concerns about the possible success of the project.

“There are a great number of problems with getting this project off the ground and we also need to act pretty quickly for a number of reasons,” said Mr Whyatt.

“Firstly the mural is in a terrible state and deteriorating quickly. There is more graffiti being daubed on the site every month because one bit of graffiti attracts another bit. We really need to start the work in the next 12 months because going through another winter with the condition of the wall will causes more problems and inevitably more expense. We want to keep as much original artwork on the site as possible to keep the costs down. This is a big mural and it will be expensive to restore,” he continued.

“And that brings me to my second concern: cost. If we don’t get other community organisations on board to bid for money for this with us and to involve their beneficiaries and volunteers, it will be very difficult to secure the money needed. Money is very tight at the moment because to the current financial climate. We need to get support at this meeting on Tuesday and some firm commitments from people and organisations to get involved.

“Lastly there is a danger of a commercial development on the site. A public-private partnership to create a new art feature. Because of the existing mural’s subject matter – it mocks property speculators, and land developers, etc – a commercial scheme probably backed by a property developer would not want to restore the mural’s original message. They’d want some “good news” scheme, some greenwash idea that paints them in a positive light.

“However, despite these problems, Camden Council have offered to do a condition survey on the mural. This will save us a lot of money. But having said that there are five council departments to deal with to get permission for this restoration work, and they don’t always talk to each other.

“But if the public and local voluntary organisations show their support, we can make it happen,” Mr Whyatt concluded.

The mural restoration will be just one part of a year long project of heritage and conservation awareness-raising. “The project is not just about the mural but also wider plans to promote awareness of heritage and conservation in an area of London under threat from commercial development. In fact the bulk of the project is about the heritage and conservation and the mural is just one part of it, and the most visible because of its situation,” Mr Whyatt later added.

There will be a public meeting about the heritage and mural project at 7.30 pm tomorrow (Tuesday), at the Neighbourhood Centre, 39 Tottenham Street. The public can also comment about the proposals on the Fitzrovia Heritage and Mural website.

A Complete Town Planning By Property Designs

by

Adley Sone

Property designs are one of the most renowned companies that have been providing great service in town planning. We have skillful as well as qualified consultants who will guide you in proper town planning. We have made more than 100 developments in this sphere. We take competitive price for our service. We have received great appreciations for our service from our clients. Thus you can use our service if you want to develop your existing land or dwelling. Our town planning includes Multi Units, Dual Occupancy and subdivision processes.

Planning Permit application is an important aspect of our

town planning

process. Unless and until the Planning Permit application is framed you cannot construct a single unit on your land. Hence, we have an expert Council who will guide you to frame the Permit as well as assist you to submit the Planning Permit application. If by any case, you need some clarifications regarding the advancement of the units, we will solve your problem by organizing Pre-application meeting. By arranging this meeting, the council can process the Planning Permit application faster.

Along with framing the Permit application we will also help you to construct numerous units on your site. Depending upon the condition of the site, we decide how many units can be constructed on your land. While making the property assessment we take into consideration various factors such as the condition of the land/site, overlay and many more. After analyzing all these factors we frame a report with complete information that you may require.

Our subdivision process comes up with subdivision of land or extension of house plans. The subdivision process is actually very times consuming as well as very complicated. Thus for such a complicated task we usually provide you with experienced and skilful Land Surveyor or a Planning Consultant. A Planning Permit application is also required for both, subdivision of your land as well as extension of your home. In certain cases if your land has these key conditions such as it must be bigger than 30 sq.m, it must be located within a Residential 1 zone or Mixed use, it must not have any planning overlays as well as covenants or restrictions on the Certificate of Title then you don t need to frame the Permit.

We will also give you detail ideas if you want dual occupancy development. Dual occupancy development actually includes subdivision of our home along with you land. Your capital gets sealed when you execute

dual occupancy

plan. The house that you already have will automatically generate income even if your project is just planned. Sometimes the income is generated after the development. If you are having a land of 675 Esq. then it would be enough to construct two homes on the land. Once the land is divided into two parts, each part will have single home measuring 337 Esq. The value of these two homes will be more than the single home constructed on the entire land. Thus this process will bring you lots of income. Moreover, when you are planning to build dual occupancy homes you need to focus on some of the basic factors such as need of sufficient space, sufficient area for entrance and exit of vehicles as well as financial stability of the proposal.

Thus use our service and have a proper town planning.

Rhode Island borrows $90 million from US for jobless claims

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Rhode Island will receive US$90 million in funding from the United States federal government to support unemployment benefits in the state.

Rhode Island’s Department of Labor and Training stated on Wednesday that it requested the line of credit because the account utilized to provide funding to unemployed individuals in the state had decreased to only $2 million; enough to last only a few days.

Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.

In a statement released by the Department, the agency said: “Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.”

Unemployment in Rhode Island was 12.8 percent in August 2009 – the third-highest rate in the United States. During the first eight months of 2009, Rhode Island’s state unemployment insurance trust fund has provided over $300 million in unemployment benefit funding.

In addition to Rhode Island, 20 other states have outstanding balances on money they borrowed from the Federal Unemployment Account of the United States Department of Labor. Rhode Island has an outstanding balance of approximately $90.68 million due to the account. The loans are interest-free until December 2010.

Curiosity Rover analysis suggests chemically complex lake once graced Mars’s Gale crater

Sunday, June 4, 2017

In an analysis published on Friday in Science, scientists announced data collected from the Curiosity Rover show that Mars’s Gale Crater was once a chemically stratified lake, meaning the aquatic environment differed markedly between deep and shallow water. According to the report, “all of the physical, chemical, and energetic conditions necessary to establish a habitable environment were present on Mars between ~3.8 billion and 3.1 billion years ago.”

Analysis shows the chemical index of alteration fluctuated over time in a way that suggested the lake varied between hot, wet periods and colder, drier periods. The shallow water would have been rich in oxidants brought in from the atmosphere and groundwater, and the deeper water would have been oxidant poor. Phosphates, carbon, nitrogen, iron and sulfur, indicating chemistry suitable for life, have also been found there in a variety of compounds.

Lead author Joel Hurowitz of Stony Brook University explained, “These were very different, co-existing environments in the same lake[…] This type of oxidant stratification is a common feature of lakes on Earth, and now we’ve found it on Mars. The diversity of environments in this Martian lake would have provided multiple opportunities for different types of microbes to survive.”

The scientists also evaluated the fineness of the sediment, meaning the sizes of individual particles of dirt, dust and sand. Curiosity found larger grains near the edges of the lake where sediments from incoming rivers and streams would have fed it, and smaller ones in what would have been the deep lakebed, which is consistent with particles dropping out of the water as the current slows down. “We could tell something was going on,” Hurowitz said in a statement. “What was causing iron minerals to be one flavor in one part of the lake and another flavor in another part of the lake? We had an ‘Aha!’ moment when we realized that the mineral information and the bedding-thickness information mapped perfectly onto each other in a way you would expect from a stratified lake with a chemical boundary between shallow water and deeper water.”

Red Flags For Transmission Repair

byAlma Abell

Sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs, there are things you can put off and things that require immediate attention. Transmission repair issues fall into the second category as a transmission that fails will leave you stranded with no way to complete a quick fix to get it to a garage or transmission shop.

Understanding the red flags that your car will display before you are left stranded on the road is critical. If you see any of the following symptoms or signs that you need a transmission repair get to a transmission specialist immediately. If you have any difficult in getting the vehicle into gear or if there is a suspected leak call the transmission specialist and discuss if driving your vehicle to the shop is even an option.

Red Fluid under the Vehicle

A sure sign that you need transmission repair is any signs of leaking from any component of the transmission. As a sealed unit leaks are a huge problem as without the right level of fluid in the system the transmission can overheat very quickly.

The normal color of transmission fluid is a bright red color. If it looks dark red, brown or even closer to black where it is leaking this is a signal that there may be overheating problems already.

A Sweet Burnt Smell

While you may not see anything leaking under your vehicle leaks can still happen. You will typically smell a sweet, burnt like odor in and around the front of the vehicle when the engine is on and running or when you turn the vehicle off. If you smell this odor immediately get to a transmission repair as this indicates both leaking and overheating.

Strange Noises

The most common sounds with an automatic transmission that is on the way out is a higher pitched whining or buzzing type of sound. It will be easy to hear and may occur only at specific speeds or during the automatic gear changes at first. However, if you don’t get transmission repair it will get progressively worse.

The good news is that if you get into a transmission specialist early your transmission repair bill may not be all that big. The earlier that the problem is detected the less damage that is likely to have been done, however that will depend on the specific part failure that caused the problem in the first place.

We can provide transmission repair for your vehicle. To learn more about our services visit us at Trannyman.net.

New York tour bus crash kills 14

Correction — March 15, 2011 The destination of the bus was in Manhattan, not Uncasville as stated in the article.

Sunday, March 13, 2011

At least fourteen people have died after a chartered bus crashed in The Bronx, New York. According to authorities, the tour bus accident also injured eighteen other people, amongst which five were critically injured.

The vehicle was travelling from Mohegan Sun in Connecticut to the village of Uncasville, also located in Connecticut. When the crash occurred on Interstate 95 at approximately 0535 EST (1035 UTC) on Sunday, there were at least thirty-one passengers present.

40-year-old Ophadell Williams, the driver of the bus, reported to the police that the vehicle came into contact with a semi-trailer truck, which was veering across the interstate. He said that he attempted to move out of the way of this vehicle, causing the bus itself to swerve, overturn and scrape the side of a railing for one hundred yards before impacting with a highway sign’s upholding bar.

Captain James Ellson, of the fire service, described the scene as “a pile of humans, either still in their seats or on the floor, wrapped in the metal”. Jose Hernandez, one of the survivors of the bus crash, said that “[w]e tried to help people, but there was twisted metal in the way”.

The semi-trailer truck driver failed to stop after the accident. Police are currently attempting to detect this driver. Raymond Kelly, the current New York City Police Commissioner, stated that the truck was moving on a lane to the bus’ nearside, although whether the vehicles came into contact with each other or not is yet to be confirmed. Both vehicles were travelling at “a significant rate of speed”, according to Kelly.

Australian government to censor 3G mobile content

Thursday, June 15, 2006

Helen Coonan, Australia’s communications minister announced on Wednesday that the Howard government planned on introducing legislation into parliament restricting access to inappropriate or harmful material on so-called “emerging content services”. The government considers 3G mobile communications and subscription-based Internet portals to be emerging content services.

Senator Coonan said in a statement that the government was supportive of new technology, but felt that the technology requires safeguards to ensure that children are not exposed to inappropriate content.

“The Government supports the development of innovative new communications services which provide access to the Internet, email, games, instant messaging, chat rooms, video clips and television programs,” she said.

“However, these new content services may also potentially carry offensive or harmful content and we need to ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect children from exposure to content that might be harmful.”

Senator Coonan said the government intends to prohibit material rated X18+ and restrict access to other services based upon the subscriber’s age and content classification. Speaking of the proposed legislation, the minister said “It will extend the current safeguards that apply to content delivered over the Internet or television to be applied to content delivered over convergent devices,”

“This will include prohibition of content rated X18+ and above, requirements for consumer advice and age-restricting access to content suited only to adults.”

The announcement comes as the government released a report into the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework and how it applies to new delivery methods.

The report, received by the government in April, found that the differences between television, print, radio and Internet media would be blurred by devices such as 3G mobile phones and wireless Internet access. It suggested that the government regulate based on the amount of control service providers have over content instead of via the method used to access it.

It also found that much of the content available via emerging content services was based upon that of other mediums, where censorship already takes place.

The report did however express concern about mobile chat services, claiming they could be used by pedophiles to target children. The report found it would be more difficult for parents to supervise their children’s mobile chat behaviour as they would have access to the service from anywhere. The report said this could be countered by the fact that mobile users are easier to identify than users on the Internet, making pedophiles less likely to use the service.

The report also suggested that Internet access via mobile telephones be limited to customers over the age of 18, unless minors have permission from their parent or guardian. Under current Australian law, a minor is unable to sign up for an account with an Internet service provider, but is able to access WAP based Internet services without restriction.
