Massage Stones: Types And Differences

Submitted by: Emily Taylor

There are many different types of massages, one of which is called a stone massage. During a stone massage, a trained masseuse uses a flat and smooth stone to heal the body by placing it on various key points. Normally, a basalt stone is used because of its heat retentive qualities. As this health and relaxation technique developed the types of stones used also broadened. During a stone massage, the stone is normally placed in water which is heated to the proper temperature. In some instances, cold stones can be used. These stones are then placed on various parts of the body like the back, toes and even on the palm of the hands.

Most individuals are aware of this type of massage because of its use in popular culture such as in movies and television shows. But many do not know its true curative qualities. Massage therapy using stones or rocks is said to relax the tight muscles of the body and is most often a preliminary step to a more deeper massage.

The basalt stone, as previously mentioned, is the most common stone used during massage therapy. They are commonly used in hot stone massages because they are able to retain heat well. When the stone is heated it is able to help loosen muscles and also allows the body to absorb oils used during massages. Basalt stones also carry natural oils as a result of their iron, manganese, serpentine and magnesium make up. As a result, the basalt stone is a natural lubricant which aids the muscles of the body to relax.

Jade is also another commonly used stone during a massage and is often used in heat preparations. Like the basalt stone, they also serve as excellent muscle relaxants. Jade was first used by the Chinese as they discovered its many healing properties. Many massage therapists use jade as they believe the stone promotes courage, compassion, generosity and longevity. Jade can also be used in cold massage preparations. When chilled the stone helps to bring the client to a deep state of relaxation.

Marble is also a commonly used massage stone and is exclusively used in only cold massage preparations. Marble is a pebble like stone which has been created by organisms and has a natural mix of limestone and calcite. When marble is used during massage therapy the masseuse places it on key points of the body in an effort to remove blocked energy. Marble is said to create a pleasant balance within the human body.

Sardonyx is a stone used in both hot and cold preparations because of its excellent ability to retain both temperatures for a prolonged period of time. Many massage therapists ensure to have this rock in their arsenal because of its multi-functional qualities.

Massage therapy using stones is an old and ancient method of healing the body. Many massage therapists believe that stone massages are the perfect remedy for relieving anxiety and stress. Massage stones are perfect as relaxation techniques both to the client s state of mind and to their body.
