Three Major Attractions In The San Francisco Bay Area

 • Find Out More About:
 • High End Custom Home Builders Adelaide

June, 2014 byAlma Abell

In the San Francisco Bay Area, apartments may look out on one or all of the 3 major attractions in the region. These are why some come to visit the city. They are even why some people decide to live there. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the 3 major attractions are:

 1. The Golden Gate Bridge
 2. Fisherman’s Wharf
 3. Alcatraz

The San Francisco Bay Golden Gate Bridge

In the San Francisco Bay Area, it is hard to escape the art deco beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge. There is also no reason why you would want to. As city landmarks go, this bridge has it all. It is elegant, graceful, overpoweringly big, historically significant and, to a large extent, though this depends upon the time of day, practical.

Built in over a 4-year period in the 1930s, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to traffic on May 27-28, 1937. Its successful construction owns much to chief engineer and the man who conceived the idea Joseph Baermann Strauss (1870–1938). He was helped out on the project by Irving Morrow (1884–1952) the architect responsible for the design and Charles Alton Ellis (1876–1949), another experienced significant engineer and all the workers. Today, it remains one of the most recognizable symbols of a city with a museum tucked under the North Tower – the Bay Area Discovery Museum

Fisherman’s Wharf

Sometimes considered as part of Downtown San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf is a major destination. The actual Wharf has been home to fishing boats since the Gold Rush. The boats still arrive along with crowds to watch them unload their fresh catch. Yet, the character of the Wharf has changed with the times. Today, visitors enjoy taking part in a variety of regularly scheduled events throughout the year.

You can catch a movie in 7D, dine at one of several restaurants, shop at Pier 39 or wander along the Bay. There are museums and the Aquarium. If you are a resident of one of the many San Francisco Bay Area apartments, you can volunteer to help out with such worthy projects as the The Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel.

Alcatraz

Probably the most famous prison in North America was Alcatraz. Locate on the island of the same name in the middle of the Bay, it had a reputation for being one of the toughest prisons to break out of and live. This high security prison, closed since 1963, was once home to such infamous men as Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz.

Today, you can join others as they ride boats out to visit the island and tour the facilities. You can learn all about its history and who stayed there between its opening and closing dates – 1934-1963. If you are feeling particularly fearless, you can take part in an evening or night time tour.

If you love the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy “the Birdman of Alcatraz,” you may want to look for San Francisco Bay Area apartments that offer you the chance to visit on a regular basis these attractions. Spend some time in the city. Ride a Cable Car or sail out on a Ferry. When you live in San Francisco, the transportation options seem endless.

Volunteers and food needed for flooded Manitoba, Canada

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Local municipal and provincial volunteers in Manitoba, Canada are exhausted in their efforts to divert the rising waters of the Red River of the North.

It has been hard work with little sleep for the residents who live on the shores of the Red River to shore up their defences with sandbags, build dikes, clear frozen culverts and break ice jams

Volunteers to spell relief for local volunteers and food are desperately needed.

“It’s a week now we’ve been doing this … you’re talking four, five, six public works guys. In my one community we’ve got 25 volunteer firefighters and those guys have been going 24/7, so of course it’s wearing them down.” said Paul Guyader, Manitoba’s emergency measures coordinator.

“We’re dealing with one of the biggest floods the province has ever seen,” said Steve Strang, mayor of St. Clements, Manitoba “We’ve put out hundreds of thousands of bags already. The municipalities are working very well, we’re working with the provincial government, we’ve brought in every possible resource we could to address this issue. The volunteerism within the community has been phenomenal.”

The Portage Diversion has taken some spring waters from the Assiniboine River and diverted the flow to Lake Manitoba.

Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation has been totally evacuated, as well as many homes near the Canada – United States border.

The cold weather is freezing the ice jams into place. Guyader has had 2 Amphibex Excavators operating on the river breaking up ice.

The Red River is right now 16.7 feet (5 metres) above spring ice conditions. The Red River Floodway gates cannot be opened with the current ice jams.

“If we operate now, we can get ice jamming going into the floodway, jamming up against the St. Mary’s bridge, as such, the floodway capacity would be reduced and would cause higher water levels in the city of Winnipeg.” said Steve Topping, Manitoba Water Stewardship spokesman

The floodway was constructed in 1968 following the 1950 flood to divert the overflow spring flooding waters of the Red River. The floodway has been widened the since the 1997 “flood of the century” and the expansion is expected to be completed this spring. As well Manitoba built permanent dikes around communities within the flood plain since the last two major floods..

The Red River waters will crest between the beginning of April to mid April, at which time also the weather should be warming up. Communities are bracing for higher water levels, more ice jams as well as melting snow in the warmer spring temperatures.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Chango Mezcalero: Pottery Mezcal Bottle from Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxacan Clay Spirits Container Has a Curious History in San Bartolo Coyotepec

Alvin Starkman, M.A., LL.B. Chango Mezcalero has become a very collectible folk art item whose history has been recounted infrequently, if at all. While by all accounts it originated in the State of Oaxaca, home of mezcal the spirit distilled from the baked, then fermented agave plant its now highly sought after by collectors residing much further abroad. The story of Chango Mezcalero may provide a link between the grey, functional pottery produced in Oaxacas San Bartolo Coyotepec initially during pre-Hispanic times, and the areas contemporary black pottery or barro negro. Black pottery is stated to have resulted from the 1952/53 innovation of now famous Zapotec native potters, Doa Rosa Real and husband Don Juventino Nieto. What Exactly is Chango Mezcalero, the Curious Monkey-Shaped Mezcal Bottle? Chango Mezcalero is a clay receptacle in the shape of a monkey, often painted in brilliant colors, traditionally used for mezcal. In modern times the monkey shape has been manufactured as mainly decorative folk art, sometimes unpainted yet with detailed etching into the grey clay, occasionally bottomless and without a spout since its not intended for serving liquid. The traditional Chango Mezcalero was used to hold, display and / or gift mezcal for imbibing, and hence the name. The clay bottle is just that, usually with a stopper made of cork, or a small piece of corn cob. Some of the more common poses of the monkey include eating or simply holding a banana, arms across the chest, and one hand in front with the other covering an eye. Chango Mezcalero served both the tourist and local trade. Its encountered with Recuerdo de Oaxaca (Souvenir of Oaxaca) written on the back; and sometimes as a pair, with the name of a man painted on the front of one figure and of a woman on the other, suggested local use as personalized gifts for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and other rites of passage. Sometimes its found painted, yet with no inscription, by no means unusual since its original function was as a combined adornment and serving bottle kept on the shelves of cantinas. Chango Mezcaleros size is usually between 8 and 9.5 in height. The traditional forms hold between about 700 ml and 1 liter, respectively. Linking Barro Negro and Chango Mezcalero in an Historical Context Eighty-year-old Don Valente Nieto, sole surviving progeny of Doa Rosa and Don Juventino, states that anyone else in his hometown of San Bartolo Coyotepec who maintains that they or their deceased relatives were the creator of Chango Mezcalero, is mistaken or misstating fact. He believes that his father, a highly talented sculptor, was the innovator of not only Chango Mezcalero, but other fanciful clay vessels used for holding mezcal. Don Valente reveals that it all began when cantina operators from Oaxaca first one, followed by others started coming to the Nieto-Real homestead, requesting the chango bottle for keeping, displaying and selling mezcal. Eventually other animal forms were requested and produced. While the gifted Don Juventino created those different shapes as well, Chango Mezcalero gained notoriety. Don Valente notes the clay molds of the chango, mermaid, stylized owl and more, tucked away as mementos of his fathers legacy. He points to vintage photos of his parents alongside such figures waiting to be placed in a rudimentary in-ground oven for baking. Don Juventino died in 1973, at 70 years of age, while Doa Rosa died some seven year later, at 80. Indeed Don Valentes parents are the acknowledged innovators of barro negro, the shiny black pottery now providing the livelihood for most townspeople in San Bartolo Coyotepec. In fact Nelson Rockefeller was an admirer of Doa Rosa and her barro negro, and himself had a substantial collection of her work. Before the early 1950s innovation of black pottery, and dating to pre-Hispanic times, villagers were producing only utilitarian grey clay pieces such as San Bartolos noted cantaro form. An alternate version of the origin of Chango Mezcalero comes from the San Bartolo Coyotepec family of Marcelo Simon Galan, deceased. His granddaughter advises that her abuelo used to go on trade routes with his grey clay pieces including water bottles and pitchers. She continues that someone once asked him to make a monkey form, he complied, and then orders began to come in from others. He worked with the clay, while others did the painting. With further investigation more facts will hopefully emerge which may lead to additional credence being given to this version of the origin of Chango Mezcalero. For what its worth, one of Don Marcelos changos is on display at the Museo de Arte Popular de Oaxaca in San Bartolo Coyotepec. Nowithstanding the foregoing, and subject to further information coming to light, if the Nieto-Real family was the creator of barro negro, now coveted by collectors of Mexican crafts across the globe, is it too far a stretch to suggest that perhaps the same family was the innovator of Chango Mezcalero? As to why initially a chango, perhaps theres a relationship between the black-faced, monkey-feautured Memin Pinguin Mexican comic book character, and the origins of Chango Mezcalero. Cautionary Notes Concerning the History and Significance of Chango Mezcalero The foregoing is hypothesis, based on partial oral histories and an examination of various vintage and contemporary pieces. While some would discount the validity of oral histories vis–vis Oaxacan studies, they remain an important methodology for piecing together information including chronology; sometimes complementing, while at other times being the only viable research tool yielding results. When examining the relationship between the development of pre-Hispanic pottery traditions, barro negro and Chango Mezcalero, one must keep at least three points in mind: The richness, diversity and multitude of pre-Hispanic art-forms developed in the central valleys of Oaxaca, as evidenced in, amongst other places, Oaxacas Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre.Hispanic Art; Two oral histories exist in San Bartolo Coyotepec regarding the origins of Chango Mezcalero, and more may come to light (or perhaps have already been told), with the distinct possibility that there may never be any definitive answer and perhaps development began at roughly the same time, at different workshops; There may indeed be physical evidence disputing the foregoing stories of the origin of Chango Mezcalero, and in fact close examination of bottles suggests that at some point in time it was produced using a different clay than that used for making barro products in San Bartolo Coyotepec. Despite these and other caveats, the little, often colorful monkey-shaped mezcal bottle known as Chango Mezcalero, provides historians with fruit for further research, and folk art collectors with at least provisional answers to their queries.

Postal suspension lifted in Hamilton, New Zealand

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

The two-day postal delivery suspension placed on three streets in Hamilton, New Zealand has been lifted by New Zealand Post and the posties are back to work delivering mail.

The suspension of deliveries applied to Tennyson Road, Dryden Road, and Emerson Place, which are located in Fairfield. New Zealand Post came to the decision on Friday to put the ban in place because of recent gang violence/conflict. Along with the New Zealand Police, New Zealand Post reviewed the current situation, and also drove along the streets, they came to the conclusion that the situation has now “cooled down,” according to New Zealand Post spokesperson, Fiona Mayo and postal delivery general manger, Matthew Nant.

The residents on those streets came out to greet the postie, who was accompanied by business leader Brendon Coker, as she delivered the residents mail. Martha Rollo, Tennyson Road resident for 13-years, said that she was thrilled that her mail was once again being delivered after the “senseless” gang violence had temporarily stopped post. “Why should the rest of the locals suffer because of the gangs. We don’t need this hassle.” Ms Rollo said that the gang activity has only recently happened.

Vicky Roughan and Kevin Roughan, 12-year residents of Dryden Road, said that the post suspension, vandalism, and gang activity has been a problem for them. Mr Roughan claims that children from the age of nine and up are drinking late at night. “You don’t know what the hell’s going to happen.”

Mr Nant has apologised to the affected, inconvenienced residents.

New Zealand Post state they are going to continue to monitor the situation, however and also have on-going discussion with the local council and police “to make sure we’re abreast of any developments in the area.”

The gang violence/activity New Zealand Post are referring to is, on the previous Thursday the Armed Offenders Squad was called out where they raided three homes following a shooting, eight people were arrested, and a large number of firearms were seized.

Despite post not being delivered, newspapers were still being delivered, waste collection was still happening, and electricity meter readers were also going around house to house, checking the meters.

M?ori Party co-leader, Doctor Pita Sharples, has said that gangs are again starting to imping on on society like in the 1970s. He says we should include gangs into society, instead of disrupting them.

Wikinews previously reported on a letterbox for sale on New Zealand internet auction site, TradeMe, which has now reached a bid of $26.03 by Eliz “polysstew”.

Former US Representative Dan Rostenkowski dies aged 82

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Former US Representative Dan Rostenkowski died of lung cancer Wednesday at his vacation home in Genoa City, Wisconsin. Rostenkowski, whose political career ended in the early 1990s after he was convicted on fraud charges, was 82.

Rostenkowski’s death was confirmed by his spokesperson, Jim Jaffe, who said that the former congressman had been receiving treatment for lung cancer for a while. Rostenkowski had previously been treated for prostate cancer in the 1990s.

Rostenkowski was born on January 2, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He was an athlete and declined an invitation to try out for the Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland Athletics) in order to pursue a career in politics. Rostenkowski attended St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Wisconsin, served with the US Army in Korea, and graduated from Loyola University in 1951.

Rostenkowski’s political career was supported by the Cook County political machine, and he became a member of the Illinois state legislature in 1952, one year after graduating from college. In 1958, when he was 30, Rostenkowski was elected to the US House of Representatives. In 1961, he began serving on the United States House Committee on Ways and Means, the chief committee of the House for writing taxes. From 1981–1994, he served as the committee’s chairman. Rostenkowski was involved in the creation of Medicare in 1966 and he helped make amendments to the Social Security system in 1983.

In 1992, a federal jury began an inquiry into the House post office, and Rostenkowski was accused of buying US$22,000 in stamps with government funds and then turning them into cash. The investigation, which lasted two years, led to Republican allegations of corruption within the Democratic party. In 1994, Rostenkowski was charged with 17 felony counts, including the use of federal money to purchase furniture, and obstruction of justice. In order to avoid a trial, Rostenkowski made a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to two counts of mail fraud in exchange for fifteen months in prison, two months in a halfway house, and a US$100,000 fine.

Rostenkowski, who was not reelected for a nineteenth term in Congress in 1994, continued to maintain his innocence, and was pardoned by US President Bill Clinton in 2000.

What is MRI?

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It’s when a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer are all used to generate detailed images of the inside your body.

What is it used for?

This medical procedure is often done to help diagnose any number of conditions that involve your pelvis area, abdomen or chest. It’s also used to monitor the development or progression of any medical condition you might have that affects these internal organs. Pregnant? No worries. Unlike x-rays, a body MRI is a safe way to check and monitor on the progress of your baby. However, you still need to let your doctor know if you think you’re pregnant.

What to tell your doctor

Don’t hold out on your doctor. Make sure you relay any health problems you have. Just underwent surgery? Have life-threatening allergies? Think you might be pregnant but not quite sure just yet? Inform your doctor so your physician can make the best options when it comes to your treatment. If you have claustrophobia, you might want to inquire about getting a mild sedative before your examination.

How to prepare for an MRI

Opt for loose clothing, the kind you can easily slip on and off for convenience. Your physician will give you guidelines regarding what to eat and drink and when. Follow those to the letter. Continue taking any prescriptions or medications you have. And leave off any jewelry or accessories you have such as body piercings, removable dental work, pins, metal zippers along with other metallic items. These might compromise the magnetic field of the MRI. Remove your watch, credit cards or hearing aids as well since an MRI can damage these items, RadiologyInfo says.So when you look for a good Orlando radiology imaging center, make sure you keep these things in mind.

State Farm Insurance allegedly destroying papers

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Zach Scruggs, a lawyer for United States Senator Trent Lott, says that State Farm Insurance Company is destroying records related to claims for damage from Hurricane Katrina.

The records allegedly contain information saying that State Farm fraudulently denied insurance claims made by its policy holders, including Lott, that had homes there were damaged or destroyed when Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the Gulf Coast.

Scruggs said that Lott has “good faith belief” that many employees of the insurance company in Biloxi, Mississippi are destroying engineer’s reports that were inconclusive as to whether or not water or wind was the main cause of damage to the buildings affected by the hurricane.

Lott is among thousands of home and/or business owners who had their property damaged or destroyed during the hurricane and had their claims denied because State Farm claimed that their policies don’t cover damage caused by floods or water that was driven by the wind.

State Farm has not issued a statement on the matter so far.
