Ghanaians elect new President

Saturday, January 3, 2009

University of Ghana law professor John Atta Mills, age 64, was confirmed on Saturday as the winner of the runoff presidential election, the fifth in Ghana since the return to multi-party democracy in 1992.

According to Electoral Commission Chair, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Atta Mills obtained 50.23 percent of ballots cast on December 28, or 4,521,032 votes, while Nana Akufo-Addo got 49.77 percent or 4,480,446 votes. Despite the ruling party’s call to boycott, the Tain local election officer also announced that Atta-Mills obtained 19,566 votes in Friday’s special election there, while Nana Akufo-Addo had only 2,053 ballots.

In the parliamentary elections, Atta Mills’s NDC won 114 seats to the NPP’s 107. Minor parties and independent candidates won seven seats while two are still being contested.

President John Kufuor appealed for sobriety and urged the candidates to accept the official result.

A presidential election was held in Ghana on 7 December 2008, at the same time as a parliamentary election. Eight candidates contested the first round of voting.

Ghana’s electoral commission announced on December 10 that a run-off election must be held on 28 December, 2008 for the Ghanaian presidency. The commission said that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won 49.13% of the vote, slightly more than the other main candidate, John Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who obtained 47.92%. However, neither candidate reached the 50% mark needed to declare an outright winner to succeed President John Kufuor, who will step down after two terms.

Turnout on election day was very high. Out of some 8.6 million votes cast, more than 200,000, or 2.4% of the full total, were rejected. Overall voter turnout in the election was 69.52%.

The second round was to be rerun on 2 January 2009 in the Tain District due to ballot papers irregularities. As the number of voters in Tain, which has a constituency of about 53,000 eligible voters, exceeded Atta Mills’ margin of victory without the results, the Election Commission stated it would not announce Atta Mills as the winner until after the election rerun in Tain.

The NPP sought to delay voting in Tain as it claimed that “the atmosphere in the rural district was not conducive to a free and fair election”, but the court said it would only hear the case on January 5, denying the NPP an injunction. The NPP then proceeded to call for a voting boycott, for which it was criticized by civil groups.

On December 21, 2006, former Vice-President John Atta-Mills, who unsuccessfully ran as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate in 2000 and 2004, was overwhelmingly elected by NDC as its candidate for the 2008 presidential election.

Former Foreign Minister Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was elected as the 2008 presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a party congress on December 23, 2007. Although he fell short of the required 50%, the second-place candidate, John Alan Kyeremanten, conceded defeat and backed Akufo-Addo.

UEFA Euro 2016, semifinal: hosts France beat Germany 2-0

Saturday, July 9, 2016

On Thursday, World Champions Germany lost 2–0 to hosts France in the UEFA Euro 2016 semifinal. Antoine Griezmann scored both goals, netting six goals in the tournament. France is to play Portugal in the final tomorrow.

Germany had better ball possession and passing accuracy. But, moments before half time, captain Bastian Schweinsteiger was booked for a hand ball in the penalty area, and France were awarded a penalty kick. The Atlético striker Griezmann scored from the spotkick sending Maneul Neuer in the wrong direction. Les Blues were 1–0 up at half time.

In the second half, Jérôme Boateng was benched suffering from a ruptured muscle bundle. Later, Paul Pogba’s shot was half-cleared by Neuer, but Griezmann scored the second goal of the night and his sixth of the tournament.

Though Germany had far more completed passes — in the first half alone, more than the hosts in both halves combined — the World Champions were defeated. Griezmann was awarded the Man of the Match award.

Griezmann’s six goals in one Euro tournament is the most after Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in one tournament.

Food Grade Grease Ultimate Solution to Hygienic Food Processing

by

mpeter12

Food grade grease is the class of grease that is used in food manufacturing and processing units. It helps in maintaining the productivity quotient of the food processing equipment, by ensuring that they work smoothly. The technical function of this grease variety is same as its other counterparts like providing protection against wear, friction, corrosion and oxidation, dissipating heat and transferring power.

Traits of Food Grade Grease

As has been mentioned before, this type of grease helps in maintaining the hygiene quotient of food. This is possible because unlike other grease types, this one does not contaminate the food or beverage, even if it accidentally comes in contact with them. Most of the grease types are non-toxic, tasteless and odor free and hence do not affect the quality of the ultimate food products. Good quality oil is consistent and offers you effectiveness in all types of temperature conditions. It should definitely be compatible with rubber and other sealing materials. Sometimes, it should also provide a sealing effect for higher food productivity. Moreover, it should be neutral toward plastics and plasterers.

Benefits of Quality

Well, with this type of grease, you can definitely be sure that you deliver uncontaminated food. They are excellent lubricants that can offer friction free operation in food processing units even when rubber or plastic moving parts are involved. Good quality

Food Grade Grease

can also lubricate bearings that are exposed to extreme hot or cold water conditions, without hampering productivity. Indeed, this grease type is so effective that it can help in the protection of rubber parts that are exposed to low temperature condition, which is common in cold storage of food and beverage.

Application Areas

This grease type is specially used in food manufacturing plants. It lubricates the bearings and sliding parts of machinery used in the food and beverage industry for production, filling, packing, sealing etc. It is recommended that you use it, that has been approved by the concerned authorities to avoid wastage of food products. However, there are a few things to be noted before applying a coating of food grease. Always remove the old coatings of grease. Clean the bearing area, where the grease is to be applied thoroughly with a solvent (definitely a food grade solvent). Take care that it does not get mixed with other harmful solvents and then apply the required food grade grease.

Whatever food or beverage industry, you are planning to use your food grade grease make sure that you use only the ones that are in compliance with the required guidelines. This also ensures higher productivity and greater cost effectiveness.

Mount Stromlo, Canberra — This Easter weekend, elite mountain bike riders competed in the Australian 24-hour solo championships at Canberra’s Stromlo Forest Park. Jason English from Port MacQuarie rode 33 laps and won the men’s race. Liz Smith from Wollongong rode 25 laps and won the women’s race.

Races are won by riding the most laps. If two riders complete the same number of laps in 24-hours, the winner is the one who has ridden them in the shortest time.

Riders wear lights on their helmets and bicycles during night laps. Due to the time of year, there is roughly twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness each day.

The event is a curtain raiser for the WEMBO World Solo 24 hour Mountain Bike Championships, which will be held at Stromlo Forest Park on 12 and 13 October 2013. The race was for solo riders only.

The weekend before, the teams of riders took to the track at the Mont 24 hour race at Canberra’s Kowen forest. With over 3,000 riders participating, it is now Australia’s largest cycling race.

The team version of the race was favoured by the weekend warriors, but also attracted more than a few elite athletes. Laps were ridden in relay fashion: each rider handed over the baton (which looked like a credit card) to another member of the team after riding one or more laps.

The track was in excellent condition, running through the trees. Without steep climbs or overly difficult technical sections, it permitted fast lap times.

No injuries were reported.

Canadian university students would prefer MP3 players over car radios

Friday, March 30, 2007

At Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, students are finding that popular MP3 players, such as Apple’s iPod, are very convenient devices for listening to music at the gym, while traveling on foot, and in the car.

In a recent ad-hoc survey conducted by Wikinews contributor Darren Mar, 150 students were randomly pulled aside in the hallways of the university, and asked if they own an MP3 player. 94 of the 150 students (62.66%) did in fact own MP3 devices, most of who were found to be carrying it on them when questioned. There was one simple follow up question for those who had a player: “If it were possible to have complete and safe control of the device on the steering wheel of a car, would you rather listen to your device, or the radio?” There were three answers possible, yes, no or both. Of the 94, 78 (82.98%) said yes, eleven (11.70%) said no, and five (5.32%) said both. The reporting took place primarily on March 16, 2007. The reasons for those who would listen to their device were commercial free music, personalized choice of music, and complete control of what you are listening to.

This study was motivated by the new design of 2006+ model cars. Many are being built with auxiliary jacks for the stock radio, allowing the driver to easily connect any audio playing device to the car’s sound system with a simple 3.5mm plug. What’s more, cars in the upper price echelon are being built with (1) a custom made area in the dash for MP3 players (iPod’s being the most popular), and (2) implementing audio device control right onto the steering wheel. A good example of this is the Ford Fusion or the 2007 Lexus IS250: “The centre console input port allows an iPod, MP3 or Windows Media Audio player to be plugged into the IS audio system.”

Monday, May 21, 2012

Bruce, Canberra — This past week, an overstocked Australian Opals, the women’s national basketball team, prepared for the 2012 Olympic Games in London with a weeklong training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to be used to help narrow the nineteen member Opals squad down to the twelve that go to the Games, and provide players who rarely play together an extended period of time to play together in order to improve on court dynamics.

Camp started on Sunday, with players arriving from hometowns around Australia including Cairns, MacKay, Gladstone, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

Part 4 of a press conference at AIS with Carrie Graf, Lauren Jackson and Jenna O’Hea speakingVideo: Bidgee.

The defending champions, the United States women’s national basketball team, are perceived as the Australian Opals’ main competitors. In the last three Olympic Games the Opals got silver medals. In each of these cases the United States got first place. Coach Carrie Graf said “thinking about the US too soon in inappropriate”, “Our focus is first and foremost, game by game winning our pool”. Amongst the Australian Opals’ competitors in the pool are Brazil, Russia, and Great Britain. Carrie Graf said Great Britain “will put up a fight on home turf” but there is a “world class [AIS] facility” and “world class medical support staff” supporting the team.

Australian Opal player Penny Taylor recently suffered injury from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, meaning she cannot play Olympics this year. In regards to the situation player Lauren Jackson, who is going into her fourth Olympics, said “you would never wish that upon anybody.” She says as a team they have to “move on, move through that” and “come together” to pick up their offence and defense. Despite the loss of one of their key players she says “we definitely have the talent there” and the team is all “on the same page.” She feels “pretty confident” and speaks of “very exciting” times ahead. Jenna O’Hea is going into her first Olympics with the team. She is still “pinching” herself and says she is taking it “day by day”.

A typical day at the camp might start with a 7.00am – 8.30am breakfast at the AIS Dining hall, before one and a half or two hours of court, gym, or swimming training. The middle of each day might consist of media meetings, medical checks, team meetings, and time to practise shooting. Around 12.00pm, the players meet to eat lunch and recover from the morning. The afternoon typically consists of more training, and some scrimmage games. Players usually finish around 7.00pm for dinner, and perhaps a massage.

The nineteen players in attendance this week at training camp were Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Rohanee Cox, Cayla Francis, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Natalie Hurst, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, Kristen Veal, Carly Wilson, and Hanna Zavecz. Basketball Australia has named fifteen players that are to attend the second phase of the camp: Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Erin Phillips, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, and Hanna Zavecz.

The Abuse We Still Don’t Talk About

 • Find Out More About:
 • Family Lawyer Armidale

By Susan Dunn

The Chinese have a saying: “The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right name.’ As the holidays approach, well there’s a reason why all these movies lately about those terrible “family get-togethers.”

SPOUSAL ABUSE

Great strides have been made with spousal abuse, which mostly happens to women. As a society, we shined alight into the corners and exposed something that at one time men thought was their ‘right’ and ‘privilege,’ even ‘duty’ as husbands and father for what it is – bullying by someone too immature to contain their emotions or control their behavior who resorts to violence to get what they want or to express their frustration.

These two videos, allegedly developed in Canada for Domestic Violence awareness, tell it like it is: http://www.break.com/index/canadianpsa2.html

And http://www.break.com/index/canadianpsa1.html

It took an educational campaign because at one time spousal abuse was even legalized. Take a look at one of those websites with ‘ridiculous laws’ and you’ll find laws still on the books like not being able to beat your wife with anything bigger than a baseball bat, or without her permission first. The assumption was that only men could own property, and their women and children were property to do with as they wished.

CHILD & ELDER ABUSE

We have also made strides in the areas of child abuse and elder abuse, by the same 3-pronged attack: (1) Raising awareness; (2) legislation and punishment; and (3) treatment. We understand that throwing someone in jail, or slapping their wrist is treating a symptom, not providing a cure. Court-ordered anger-management programs are a step in the right direction; hopefully these will soon be court-ordered emotional intelligence programs, because there’s more involved than just anger, and as long as you have someone’s attention, you might as well teach them something really worthwhile, like EQ.

BULLYING & MOBBING IN THE WORKPPLACE

We are also starting to address violence in the workplace, in the form of “bullying” and “mobbing.” (See www.webstrategies.cc/mobbing.htm ). Since we have labeled it “bullying” and “mobbing,” it now officially exists and is no longer part of the woodwork, something expected. Every week I get an email from someone saying, “I didn’t know there was a name for this. Thank you.”

BUT THESE KIDS ARE LEARNING “HOW TO GET ALONG”

There remains another form of abuse to be named. In coaching, I hear = about it frequently. You probably do too, but you don’t recognize it as abuse because it sounds like this:

1.”My big brother? Best thing that ever happened to me. Beat me up every day and made me tough.”

2.”They fought constantly. Finally I gave up and would just go to my room and shut the door.”

3.”My sister got everyone at school to call me ‘Fatso.’ My dad thought it was funny. Is it any wonder I weigh 350 lbs. now? What I’m really mad about is that Mom didn’t do something.”

4.”When they got divorced, Mom would make my older brother babysit

me. He’d have his friends over, they’d get drunk and start picking on me. It even got sexual sometimes.”

5.”We only had one TV and Dad insisted we share, so my sister said

she would beat me up if I didn’t choose what she wanted. She said if I told Dad, she’d ‘kill me.'”

6.”Mom and Dad were always comparing us, always negative, like ‘Why

can’t you be neat like Tom?’ When I think back, Tom may have been neat, but I got good grades. Anyway, it made us hate each other.”

SIBLING ABUSE

Yes, what we’re talking about is SIBLING ABUSE. It isn’t just “kids being kids,” it’s abuse, including sexual abuse, that can have a lasting effect.

Like spousal abuse 25 years ago, people talk about it like it’s to be expected, or, if extreme will say, “Well she must’ve deserved it.” It is not recognized as something wrong to do; in fact it’s often considered helpful.

Victims of sibling abuse do NOT learn “how to get along.” They learn how to fight – aggressively if they have the edge; passively if they do not. Their attitude toward peers will be defensive. They harbor rage, depression, shyness, avoidance or aggression and are unable to form good social or work relationships with peers. They have low self-esteem and the victim mentality (or conversely, turn into bullies themselves), like other abusers, but unlike other abusers they will not get help, because “nothing happened.” Abuse from siblings has no texture, no fiber, no face.

It’s natural to resent, and feel anger and envy. How to understand and manage the behaviors, and what to do, must be monitored and shaped. In other words, children need to be actively taught emotional intelligence.

A special breeding ground is the step- or blended family. It’s another adjustment for the children, and means their parent’s attention is split once again. As Step-parenting Expert on about.com’s Ask the Expert, I get more questions all the time. Whether the children resort to silently ignoring or aggressively battling the “other side,” it takes = leadership and commitment on the part of the parents to forge a family not just a bunch of people reluctantly house under the same roof. =

What you want to do is teach the children emotional intelligence, which includes managing negative feelings, understanding that others have feelings, practicing empathy, and learning interpersonal skills such a negotiating and conflict resolution.

Small things, the children can be taught to handle by themselves. Big things, such as put-downs and victimizing, you must address yourself. To ignore them is to condone them.

Unsupervised, and allowed to compete and bully, the scenario can be like the Discovery channel. The bird born first (by a day or 3) has a permanent advantage over the second one and will push it aside to get the worms, peck it, smother it, push it out of the nest, or even kill and eat it. The size differential is too great and the parents are too oblivious.

As a parent you need to notice who is getting the worms. It is your job. Make the decision that you will teach your children harmony, team spirit, empathy, compassion, and nuturing. My ebook, “Developing Your Child’s EQ” can help. Hone your own skills first, with the EQ Alive! Program, so that you can join in. It’s something to do with your children; that’s part of it. Learn as much as you can, because you are always modeling behaviors and attitudes, whether you intend to or not. The children are watching.

And help spread the word. Call it by its right name.

U.S. automaker GM plans to close 1,100 dealerships

Friday, May 15, 2009

American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) announced plans Friday to shut down about 1,100 of its dealerships, in an effort to evade bankruptcy and lower its expenditures.

GM’s move comes a day after Chrysler, another U.S. car maker, released a list of 789 dealerships that it was closing. Unlike Chrylser, GM will not publicly announce the dealerships that it intends to shut down. Instead, dealerships whose franchises won’t be renewed after October of next year will receive a private letter telling them of the decision.

At the moment, GM has 6,246 dealers in the U.S. It intends to reduce that number to 3,605 by the end of 2010. GM said the dealerships that were to be closed are “underperforming and very small sales volume U.S. dealers.”

“They’re dealerships that are in most cases hurting, losing money, and in danger of going out of business anyway,” said GM’s sales, service, and marketing vice president in a telephone conference. “It’s a move that people could argue should have been taken years ago but this leadership team had no choice but to do it today.”

The dealers that are to be closed represent 18% of the firm’s dealership network, but only 7% of GM’s 2008 revenue.

Massachusetts lawmakers enact plan for universal health coverage

Friday, April 7, 2006Legislators in the Massachusetts General Court, their name for the state legislature, approved legislation on Tuesday, April 4, that would make it the first state in the United States to require all residents to have health insurance and impose penalties for non-compliance. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican who is expected to run for U.S. President in 2008, is expected to sign the bill.

The bill passed the lower house, the Massachusetts House of Representatives by a vote of 155-2, and unanimously by the state senate. The Democratic Party holds supermajorities in both houses of the legislature.

Among the bill’s provisions are these:

 1. Businesses that employ more than 10 people are required to provide health insurance for all staff or face fines of $295 per year per uninsured worker.
 2. Individuals will be required to enroll in a health plan by July 1, 2007, or face tax penalties.
 3. Health insurers will provide partially to fully subsidized coverage for low-income residents.

At least one other state (Hawaii) requires employers to provide employee health insurance, but no other state holds individuals accountable for coverage.
