Puppies used to smuggle heroin

Thursday, February 2, 2006

Ten puppies with bags of liquid heroin surgically implanted into their bellies were having seizures in a drug bust in Medellin, Colombia, said authorities.

“They utilized a wide range of smuggling, the most repulsive of which was the use of puppies,” said John P. Gilbride, head of the DEA’s New York office.

“There have been cases of animal cruelty that have led to the discovery of drug labs, but not to the extent of an animal being used to carry drugs, especially a puppy,” said ASPCA spokeswoman Jo Sullivan.

Investigators believe that the dogs were used to smuggle heroin into New York on commercial flights. The drugs were then to be distributed and sold along the East Coast.

“Ten puppies, including Labrador retrievers, were rescued during a 2005 raid on a farm in Colombia,” said the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on Wednesday. The Agency also announced that they had made more than 30 arrests.

Authorities believe that a veterinarian, Andres Lopez Elorez (who is also believed to be a fugitive in Spain), opened the bellies of at least six of the ten puppies, inserted 500 mL bags of liquid heroin, and then stitched them back up. Three puppies had died due to infections after the drugs were removed. A total of 3 kg of heroin were recovered from six puppies. The bags were found using ultrasound.

“The surviving dogs are still alive and well, we’re told,” said Gilbride. “I think it’s outrageous and heinous that they’d use small, innocent puppies in this way. This investigation identified the individuals who were responsible for overseeing and smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin from Colombia to the East Coast.”

The investigation revealed that the smugglers, whose ring was based in Medellin, not only used people and puppies to conceal their drugs, but also body creams, aerosol cans, and the linings of purses and luggage.

A tipster is said to have led authorities to the puppies.

It is not known how many puppies were actually used in the smuggling operation.

Three dogs were adopted by Colombian police. At least one of those puppies will be trained to sniff for drugs.

About 24 kilograms of heroin was seized in recent raids in Colombia which have resulted in more than 20 arrests and another ten in custody in New York. A total of at least 24 kilograms have been seized in these raids.

Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

US Republicans query Linux Foundation about open-source security

Wednesday, April 4, 2018

On Monday, two US Republican Party legislators, Greg Walden and Frank Pallone Jr., respectively the chairman and the ranking member of the United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce, co-wrote a public letter to Jim Zemlin, executive director of The Linux Foundation, about open-source software (OSS) and improving its security. They requested Zemlin to answer their questions by no later than April 16.

The letter contained the following four questions; each of the first two has a further two follow-up questions.

  1. Has the CII [Core Infrastructure Initiative] performed a comprehensive study of which pieces of OSS are most crucial to the “global information infrastructure”?
    1. If not, does the CII plan to perform such a study?
    2. What would the CII need in order to do so?
  2. Has the CII, or any other organizations, compiled any statistics on OSS usage?
    1. If not, does the CII plan to perform such a study?
    2. What would the CII need in order to do so?
  3. In your estimation, how sustainable and stable is the OSS ecosystem?
  4. Based on your response to the previous question, how can the OSS ecosystem be made more sustainable and stable?

Walden and Pallone exemplified Heartbleed, a “critical cybersecurity vulnerability” that allowed the hacking of websites and passwords, and millions of medical records in 2014. They also wrote that, in response to that vulnerability, The Linux Foundation established a multi-million dollar project, the Core Infrastructure Initiative, intended to improve the global infrastucture of such software.

The politicians noted large tech companies like Microsoft, Apple Inc., and Adobe Systems respond more quickly to such critical vulnerabilities than distributors and developers of open-source software.

Open-source software is “publicly accessible” and usually freely-licensed for a wide range of use, such as modification and commercial uses. Walden and Pallone also expressed praise toward open-source software and cited a 2015 survey conducted by Black Duck Software saying 78% of companies used such software.

Kitchen Electrical Supplies

by

Hamlin Kon

Kitchen appliances use a varied amount of electricity which is dependent on their efficiency. An appliances location can affect electricity usage. For example, water heaters that are not properly insulated are more likely to be less efficient and use more electricity than that of a well-located and insulated water heater. Electricity usage amount also relies on the age of the appliance such that refrigerators that have been purchased many years ago use more electricity than new ones. Average usage of freezers and refrigerators purchased before 1985 is 100 kilowatt hours per month. One that is purchased after year 2000 uses 37.5 kilowatt hours per month.

Most appliances today are labeled on how much electricity they use. However, usage of electricity also depends on the frequency of the appliances use.

There are highly recommended practices for kitchen renovation and application of kitchen electrical supplies. There must be at least 2 20-ampere, 120-volt circuits supplying power to ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacles for countertop and dining areas. Basic lighting circuits should be one 15-amp, 120-volt circuit feeding ceiling fixture, or recessed lights. As for distance between GFCIs over countertops, it must not be over 4 feet between countertop receptacles. Countertop sections exceeding a width of 12 inches are considered a “wall” and must have receptacles. Dishwasher circuits should be one 15-amp, 120-volt dedicated circuit wired with 14/2 cable. Garbage disposal circuit should be one 15-amp, 120-volt dedicated circuit wired with 14/2 cable. Microwave Circuit should be one 20-amp, 120-volt dedicated circuit wired with 12/2 cable. Electric Range Circuit one 50-amp, 120/240-volt dedicated circuit wired with 6/3 cable.

To replace an electrical unit in an existing kitchen, power wiring must be incorporated into the existing walls. The actual flow and volume of electricity that flows through kitchen electrical wiring are both important. The name given to electricitys flow is current. It is measured in units called amperes (amps). Good electrical flow may be determined by a provider of kitchen electrical supplies. This will help in the efficient use of power. Before any decisions are made on kitchen wiring, one must find out the nominal and assured voltage levels for appliance-level circuits. It is also beneficial to find out if the kitchen electrical provider can supply dedicated circuits of higher levels without resulting to problems in the supply of electricity to the other sections of the house.

Kitchen electrical supplies refer to all products and accessories that require electricity to operate and are used in residential and industrial kitchens. The products under kitchen electrical supplies range from vast choices of lighting supplies, heating supplies, alarms, kitchen hardware, ventilation supplies, water heaters, wiring accessories, electrical cable supplies, cable accessories, distribution and switchgear, control gear, plugs and sockets, electrical fixing, tools, conduit accessories, switches, and fuses.

Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

9/11 health care bill passed in US House of Representatives

Thursday, September 30, 2010

The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday approved US$7.4 billion to pay for the medical bills of workers sickened or injured by the September 11, 2001 attacks (9/11 attacks) on the World Trade Center in New York City, New York. The bill was passed by a vote of 268–160. Thirteen Republicans joined the Democrats in supporting the bill, while three Democrats opposed the measure. Similar legislation is pending in the US Senate.

“Let’s not have any more people die because of the attacks of 9/11,” said Representative Anthony Weiner, a Democrat from New York.

The bill, which will provide free health care to 9/11 workers, will be paid for by ending tax breaks for foreign corporations, was fiercely debated on the House floor, with Democratic backers of the bill proclaiming that they stood for 9/11 heroes and victims. Republicans against the bill argued that it was an entitlement program for New Yorkers and that it was another example of bloated government. “There is no excuse for this kind of legislation,” argued Texan Republican representative Lamar Smith.

The Republicans offered an alternative that would reduce funding for 9/11 workers and pay for the remainder by cutting parts of a major health care bill passed earlier this year. This measure failed 185–244.

US automaker bailout deal fails to pass Senate

Friday, December 12, 2008

A US$14 billion bailout package deal for the “Big Three” United States automakers — Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors — has been rejected in the United States Senate after failing a procedural vote.

The bill was rejected after bipartisan discussions on the bailout broke down when Republican Party leaders insisted that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union agree to increase wage cuts by next year in order to bring their pay into line with those of Japanese automobile companies in the United States. The UAW refused to meet the demands.

The final vote count in the Senate was 52-35, eight short of the 60 needed to pass. Only ten Republicans joined forty Democrats and two independents in voting for the bill. Three Democrats voted with thirty-one Republicans against it.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said that he was “terribly disappointed” by the failure of the bill to pass. “I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It’s not going to be a pleasant sight,” Reid said. “Millions of Americans, not only the auto workers but people who sell cars, car dealerships, people who work on cars are going to be directly impacted and affected.”

Republican Senator Bob Corker was also unhappy about the rejection. “We were about three words away from a deal. We solved everything substantively and about three words keep us from reaching a conclusion,” he said.

Some Democrats now want U.S. President Bush to reserve a portion of the $700 billion bailout package earmarked for Wall Street to assist the flagging car industry.

Stock markets worldwide fell dramatically on the news, with Japan’s Nikkei average losing 484.68 points, or 5.6 percent, reaching a level of 8253.87 points. Shares in the auto companies Toyota, Nissan and Honda all dropped by no less than 10 percent apiece. European stocks, such as those in the United Kingdom and Germany, also lost ground, with the FTSE-100 index of leading shares falling 176.3 points to a level of 4,211 at midday.

What Causes Bone Loss Around Your Teeth?

  • Find Out More About:
  • Hard Metals

What Causes Bone Loss around Your Teeth? by James FranklinBone loss around the teeth is a common consequence of tooth loss and chronic periodontists. Periodontists happens when bacteria slowly eats away the underlying jawbone and the periodontal ligaments connecting the bone to the tooth. Among these two, the most common cause of bone loss is tooth loss that is not replaced, especially with multiple teeth. Jawbone is preserved because of pressure and the stimulus provided by chewing. When these two things are removed because of tooth loss, the bone will reabsorb into the body. During the first year following tooth extraction, about 25 percent of the bone is already lost and will continue on as the extracted tooth is left un replaced. This bone loss happens in the bone that surrounds and supports the tooth, which is called the alveolar bone. Alveolar bone creates the ridges where the teeth are embedded. These ridges can atrophy horizontally and vertically. Replacing teeth with dentures will not solve the problem because dentures exert at most 10 percent chewing pressure on the bone than natural teeth.Removing the molars in the upper jaw can lead to more reabsorption of the bone because of the expansion of the sinus cavity. Without any teeth, air pressure in the sinus cavity causes resorption of the bone that line the sinuses. There are other causes of bone loss around the teeth, although they are not as common as tooth loss:Misaligned teeth. This creates a situation where chewing is not normal, so the needed stimulus is lost to the bone.Infection. Infection can damage the bone, creating bone loss.Face tumor. A large tumor in the face might require its removal, including some parts of the jaw.Bone loss is very preventable, and can be done by giving the jawbone much needed tooth replacement. This replacement should come with a root that will exert the same pressure as any natural teeth. Do this immediately following an extraction by replacing one tooth with dental implants or a fixed implant-supported denture or bridge.A one-tooth implant or a dental bridge that comes with three or fourth teeth supported by two implants can give a chewing power that is 99 percent of the force of a natural bite. A denture placed with dental implants gives about 75 percent of the normal biting force and should already help in preventing bone loss. To learn more about bone loss and dental implants, contact your dentist now.Periodontal disease, also called Periodontists, is a chronic degenerative disease of the gums and surrounding bone in the oral cavity. At D. Dental we provide all the prophylactic services for Periodontists, such as Scaling and Root Planing, therapeutic drug injections, and gingival flap procedures to help prevent further bone loss surrounding the teeth. One of the most important aspects of pediatric dentistry is child psychology. Dr. Daniel is trained to create a friendly and fun atmosphere for visiting children, and he always avoids threatening words like needle, drill, injection, and extraction. Dental phobias beginning in childhood often continue into adulthood, so it is extremely important that children have positive experiences and find their dental home early in life. Dr. Daniel has treated thousands of children of all ages, and everyone in your family will be treated with the most professional and gentle dental care.James Franklin is a full time author and part time blogger who like to put his review on various topicsArticle Source: eArticlesOnline.com
