Up until the dawn of the 21st Century, glass bottles were all blown by hand, and it was an expensive and time-consuming process. A glass blower was considered to be a craftsman. After the bottle blowing machine was perfected, bottles could be mass produced, and soon become commonplace.

Have you ever wondered where the six pack came from? The Coca-Cola company is credited with inventing the six-pack bottle carrier for the beverage industry. In the early 20th Century (1923) Coke was sold by the bottle and, of course, it would not be easy to carry several bottles home with you, so they developed a handy cardboard carton that held six bottles of coke. The carton had two flaps with oblong holes creating a carrying handle.
It didn’t take long for the six pack bottle carrier to catch on and before long breweries were selling their beer this way. However, plastic six-pack holders didn’t appear until the 1960s and up until a few years ago they were made from soft plastic. Many newer 6 pack bottle carrier materials are made from a stronger plastic that is economical and eco-friendly.
